Het is een langdurige traditie dat de eerste zalm van het jaar geprepareerd wordt voor een speciaal evenement waarbij geld opgehaald wordt voor lokale goede doelen.
Nu dat de eerste zalm gevangen is in Leitrim afgelopen dinsdag, zijn we verheugd te melden dat de North West Hospice, dat met compassie specialistische hulp biedt aan mensen die leven met levensbedreigende ziektes in onze community, het goede doel zal zijn waarvoor op vrijdag 9 februari een avond georganiseerd wordt in de Foxes Lair Bar & Restaurant, Bundoran. De avond begint om 20.00 uur en wordt door velen gezien als het startschot voor het visseizoen in 2018.
De vis werd geland op de rivier de Drowes, County Leitrim op dinsdag 30 januari door de lokaal bekende sportvisser Bill Likely, hij verdient hier ook de Vangst van de Week mee.
De zalm, die tussen de zes en zeven pond zwaar was, had nog zeeluizen op haar lichaam en werd gehaakt met een zwarte en goudkleurige Rapala vanaf de punt van de Meadow Pool kort voor 13.00 uur. De waterstand was hoog op dat moment, zoals eigenlijk de gehele eerste maand van het seizoen; de afgelopen dagen begint het waterpeil wel wat te dalen.
Sean Kyne TD, minister met verantwoordelijkheid voor de visserij op het zoete water, feliciteerde mr. Likely en zei: “To catch the first salmon of the year is an accolade prized among anglers and marks the return of the fishing season every January. Using the event to support a worthy cause such as hospice services puts the iconic salmon at the heart of the angling as well as the broader community.”
“Protecting and sustaining our salmon resource as a vector for development and tourism in peripheral rural areas is among my top priorities,” voegde hij er aan toe. Visserij-eigenaar Shane Gallagher overhandigde een verheugde mr. Likely de Drowes Perpetual Cup, Bill Likely werkt op de visserij en staat de locale sportvissers graag met raad en daad bij.
Ciaran Byrne, CEO van Inland Fisheries Ireland, zei: “Official confirmation of the first salmon catch of the year is always a key event. Last year, the first salmon was caught in the Careysville Fishery on the Munster Blackwater in Cork on February 1st, IFI staff have confirmed the appearance of spring salmon on a number of Donegal fisheries over recent days. The Board of IFI is concerned about the declining abundance of salmon and urges all salmon anglers to practice catch and release angling on all open salmon waters even where there is an available quota.”
Foto: In de eerste maand van het seizoen is de rivier vrijwel constant overstroomd geweest. Dit was het beeld bij de Bridge Pool bij Lennox’s Bridge afgelopen week. De waterstanden zijn nog steeds hoog, maar nu gezakt naar 0,944 meter op het peil.
Mr Byrne vervolgde: “We have a wonderful fisheries resource in this country that doesn’t just benefit anglers but offers rural communities sustainable tourism and job opportunities outside of the traditional tourist seasons. Inland Fisheries Ireland continues to work with these communities to develop our angling infrastructure and improve access, through extensive funding grants and sponsorship, with a view to increasing angling participation and growing local economic growth as a result.”
